Yoga at Work

Working in an office and focusing on your computer or paper work for long periods of time can put strain on your neck, shoulders and back; which in turn leads to tension, stiffness and pain. This causes the body to be sluggish and tension can cause headaches, as well as back, neck and shoulder pain that can change the mood and temperament of the individual.

Studies indicate that the benefits to your work force would include improved health, alertness, and general wellbeing; resulting in a reduction in the number of injuries, WSIB claims, sick days, better attendance and more cooperation between co-workers. This will in fact build a stronger team, with more ideas and focus to the detail in everyday tasks. A study by Jim McKenna from the University of Bristol showed that after exercising, participants returned to work more tolerant of themselves and more forgiving of their colleagues. Their work performance was also consistently higher, as shown by better time management and improved mental sharpness. In effect, your employees become a happier, healthier, calmer and a more productive workforce.

Corporate yoga is fast-growing in North America. Business leaders are recognizing the stress-reducing, energy-enhancing benefits that on-site yoga brings to their employees. Prevention is the key and yoga plays a major role. Many employers are benefiting from reduced health insurance rates by implementing wellness programs that include yoga. Only worksite health promotion stands out as the long-term answer for keeping employees well in the first place.

Simply introduce the staff to a trial lunch yoga class and select an ideal day that would work well for most people and the company. Space is required such as a boardroom.  Let everyone know they will need to have their own yoga mat, a bottle of water and change of clothes. After the class ask for feedback with and with that information an ideal program can be designed for your group. After that all we need to do is select a day or two for a weekly classes.
